Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama stopped at Malindi on his way to India in 1498 and erected a pillar that remains overlooking the harbor, however precariously, to this day. Still popular with Europeans, Malindi is famed for coral reefs that lie just 1,000 feet off its shore, best seen at Malindi National Marine Park or nearby Watamu. Game fishing, surfing and simply relaxing on the beach are popular local pastimes. The narrow streets and market of Malindi’s old town are worth a visit.

Day 1: Arrival and Beach Time

Day 2 - Visit Watamu Marine Park and Gede Ruins Monument

  • After breakfast, head to Watamu Marine Park, which is renowned for its coral reefs and diverse marine life.
  • Enjoy snorkeling or glass-bottom boat rides to explore the underwater world.
  • Afterward, visit the nearby Gede Ruins Monument, an ancient Swahili village dating back to the 12th century.

Day 3 - Visit Vasco da Gama Pillar and Malindi Museum

  • Start your day with a visit to Malindi Marine Park, a protected area known for its vibrant coral reefs, marine biodiversity, and crystal-clear waters.
  • Enjoy snorkeling, diving, or glass-bottom boat tours to discover the rich marine life including colorful fish, turtles, and dolphins.
  • Next, visit an eagle farm to learn about the conservation efforts and rehabilitation of birds of prey in the area.
  • Take a guided city tour of Malindi to explore its historic sites, markets, and local neighborhoods.

Day 5 - Departure Back to Nairobi

  • Check out of your accommodation and head to Malindi Airport for your flight back to Nairobi.
  • If time permits, you can do some last-minute shopping for souvenirs or take a stroll along the beach before departing.
  • Board your flight back to Nairobi, marking the end of your memorable trip to Malindi.
